WWII identification tag returns to Toscolano Maderno after 80 years
An identification tag belonging to Giulio Comincioli has returned to Toscolano Maderno, on Lake Garda’s western shore. Comincioli was an Alpini soldier born in nearby Gargnano in 1915 and was interned by German forces after 8 September.
The tag belonged to Giulio Comincioli, an Alpini soldier who was deported to the Stalag I-B/PR prisoner-of-war camp at Prostki in north-eastern Poland after refusing to collaborate with the Nazi-Fascist authorities following the 1943 armistice.
It was found buried in soil and snow near the former camp on 12 January 2025 by the historical-exploration group Jaćwież. The discovery helped reconstruct a chapter of Comincioli’s life that had remained unknown to his family for decades; he died in 2008.
In recent weeks, Italy’s Presidency of the Council of Ministers also accepted an application for a posthumous Medal of Honour in Comincioli’s name.
