Benàcus: Lake Garda in the photographs of Giorgio Attilio Mutti – exhibition at Lonato Fortress

The exhibition “Benàcus: Lake Garda and its hills in the photographs of Giorgio Attilio Mutti” will be hosted in the Captain’s Hall at Lonato del Garda Fortress from 18 September 2026 to 6 January 2027. It brings together 50 photographs taken by photographer Giorgio Attilio Mutti, who died in 2026, during 40 years of research into the landscape and wildlife of the Lake Garda area. The opening is scheduled for Friday 11 September at 11 am.

The exhibition explores a quieter Lake Garda, with woods, morainic hills, flowering plants, streams and birdlife. The images are arranged according to the seasons: spring with wood anemones and blackcaps, summer with the cliff of Monte Sasso and swifts, autumn with buzzards and the mulberry trees of Pilandro, and winter with hellebores and great tits.

The exhibition grew out of the photographic collection published in the 2025 volume “Benàcus mater temporis. Il lago e le colline moreniche” and was made possible by support from Giorgio Attilio Mutti’s family. The project is curated by Costanza Lunardi, who has highlighted the images’ role as an invitation to recognise and protect the area’s fragile environmental wealth.

Guided tours and lectures with Mauro Bailo, Simona Guioli, Costanza Lunardi, Giorgio Perazza and Nicola Rocchi are planned during the exhibition. The initiative is promoted with the involvement of Rocca di Lonato – Fondazione Ugo Da Como, the Lombardy Region, the Province of Brescia, the Municipality of Lonato del Garda, Garden Club Brescia, the FAI Brescia Delegation, Associazione Amici della Fondazione Ugo Da Como and GAL Colline Moreniche del Garda.

Admission costs 6 euros and includes the exhibition and a visit to the monumental fortress complex managed by Fondazione Ugo Da Como. Until 31 October, the exhibition is open every day from 10 am to 5 pm; from 1 November, it is open on Saturdays and Sundays, also from 10 am to 5 pm.
