Enigmatic tablet discovered at Lucone

An intact enigmatic tablet has been discovered in recent days during excavations at Lucone di Polpenazze, in the Lake Garda area. The find was made in layer US 1015, which contains a large amount of charcoal, during the 2026 archaeological campaign coordinated by Mavs in Gavardo and directed by Marco Baioni. It is the third tablet recovered from site D and the 21st found overall on the Lucone plain.

Generally made of clay and decorated with incised lines and impressions, these Bronze Age artefacts have a function that remains uncertain. They may have been calendars, tools connected with economic activities and metalworking, or ritual objects. The campaign is also focusing on the wooden structures of the ancient pile-dwelling settlement, occupied more than 4,000 years ago, and will continue until 4 September.
