Salò: wartime explosive resurfaces from Lake Garda

In Salò, a wartime explosive was found a few metres from the shore on Via Tavine, in front of the cemetery car park, after some beachgoers noticed it on the lakebed on Monday, 17 August. The item is believed to be a grenade from the First World War. It probably resurfaced because of water movement and the characteristics of this stretch of coastline.

After the report was made, the Carabinieri activated safety procedures, cleared the affected section of beach and established a perimeter prohibiting pedestrian access and vehicle stopping or parking. The area will remain closed and guarded until Army bomb-disposal experts intervene. They will determine whether to remove the explosive and transport it to a quarry equipped for controlled detonation, or whether to take the necessary containment measures on site.
