New research in the Fiavé Carera peat bog

After around forty years, archaeological research has resumed in the UNESCO-recognised pile-dwelling area of the Fiavé Carera peat bog in Trentino. Coordinated by the Archaeological Heritage Office of the Superintendency for Cultural Heritage of the Autonomous Province of Trento, the excavation began with a 12-square-metre stratigraphic test trench, presented on 19 August in the presence of Provincial Councillor for Culture Francesca Gerosa.

The work is intended to assess the state of preservation of the deposit and wooden structures and to identify possible measures to limit deterioration. It will also apply new technologies in archaeometry and bioarchaeology. The test trench will be extended by about 10 square metres to the south to study the settlement patterns of the first village. The wet environment has preserved wood, seeds, fruit and other organic materials documenting human activity from the Neolithic to the Late Bronze Age.
