Sirmione harbour: sunken boat recovered and fuel spill cleared

Sirmione harbour on Lake Garda was reopened to regular navigation after operations were completed on the morning of 19 August at Sirmione 2 harbour. A boat had sunk there overnight, causing a hydrocarbon spill in the marina. The Fire Brigade recovered and secured the vessel, while Civil Protection personnel checked that the pollutant had been contained and completed the fuel clean-up.

To prevent the fuel from spreading into the lake, the entrance and exit channel had been closed and isolated with pollution-control booms. The operations were completed by 2 p.m.: once the clean-up and removal of the booms at the marina entrance had been finished, the harbour returned to operation. The response involved the Milan Fire Brigade Diving Unit, ground personnel from the Brescia Command and a technical officer.
